Cognitive biases are consistent and predictable mental errors caused by simplified information processing strategies that prevent unaltered understanding of reality.
The traps our minds can get lost in are fourfold:
- We don't see everything. Some of the information left out is useful and important;
- The search for meaning breeds illusions. Sometimes we imagine details filled in by our assumptions and construct non-existent meanings and stories;
- Quick decisions can be wrong. Some of our quick reactions and decisions are wrong and counter-productive;
- Memory reinforces errors. Some of the things we remember further biases the system and affects our thinking process.
Organizationally, the costs of cognitive errors are very high, because they affect decision-making ability and alter decisions.
